An MOT is a legal safety and emissions inspection. Testers check lights, steering, suspension, brakes, tyres, seatbelts, windscreen, wipers, horn, exhaust, emissions, body structure and other items set by the DVSA. It is not a service and does not replace oil or filters.

Most MOT tests take 45-60 minutes. Allow a little longer if you want us to explain advisories or carry out repairs afterwards. Combined MOT and service visits take longer because both jobs are completed in one drop-off.
You can have an MOT up to one month (minus a day) before your current certificate expires and keep the same expiry date. For example, if it expires on 15 May, you can test from 16 April and the new MOT will run until 15 May the following year. Testing earlier than that starts a new 12-month certificate from the test date.
No. Driving on a public road without a valid MOT can mean a fine of up to £1,000, and your insurance may not pay out. The main exception is driving to a pre-booked MOT appointment, going directly to the test centre.
A new car needs its first MOT three years after the date of first registration. After that, it needs an MOT every 12 months.
You cannot drive a failed car on the road unless you have a current MOT still in date and no dangerous defects. We explain each fail and advisory in plain English and can repair the car here. If we carry out the repairs, a retest is free when it is completed within the DVSA rules.
